What Monopattino Reale covers

  • Damage you cause to others

Third-party liability (responsabilità civile): injury to people and damage to property you cause by accident while riding, whether the scooter is moving or stationary, including in restricted-access areas. A single limit of €7,750,000 per claim, above the legal minimums of €6,450,000 for injury and €1,300,000 for property.

  • The insurer deals with the claim

Reale Mutua negotiates with the injured party and, if it goes to court, defends you in your name with lawyers and experts it appoints. It pays the injured party even when the amount is below the €200 excess, then asks you to repay up to €200.

  • Valid across Europe

Italy, San Marino, the Vatican City, the other EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, plus the countries not crossed out on your Green Card. Abroad, the compulsory-insurance law of the country where the accident happens applies.

  • Suspend it over the winter

If you only ride in the warmer months you can suspend the policy with a self-declaration, for up to 10 months per policy year. When you reactivate it, the contract is extended by the suspended period and the unused premium is credited, taxes excluded.

  • Change scooter, keep the policy

If you sell your scooter you can move the contract to another one you own, keeping your merit class. If it is stolen, the contract ends and the unused premium is refunded, taxes and health service contribution excluded.

What it costs

The tariff starts from a fixed entry premium and changes with two things only: the municipality (comune) where you live and the number of claims on your record in the last five years (×1.5 with one claim, ×2 with two, ×3 with three or more). Four examples calculated on the insurer's tariff:

Milan

€193.25 a year

Resident in Milan, private use, no claims on record. Net premium €157.11, insurance tax €19.64, health service contribution €16.50.

Turin

€193.25 a year

Resident in Turin, private use, no claims on record. Net premium €157.11, insurance tax €19.64, health service contribution €16.50.

Bologna

€175.68 a year

Resident in Bologna, private use, no claims on record. Net premium €142.83, insurance tax €17.85, health service contribution €15.00.

Florence

€184.47 a year

Resident in Florence, private use, no claims on record. Net premium €149.97, insurance tax €18.75, health service contribution €15.75.

Annual tariff premiums including insurance tax (12.5%) and the national health service contribution (10.5%), calculated by the same engine as the online quote. The limit and the excess are the same for everyone.

Before you sign: limits and exclusions

  • Your own injuries are not covered

This is liability-only cover. By law it does not pay for injury of any kind suffered by the rider, nor for damage to property belonging to the owner and close family (spouse or partner, parents, children). There is no personal accident or legal expenses cover in this policy.

  • Carrying a passenger

The insurance does not operate for injury to passengers: Reale Mutua can recover from you the full amount it pays (recourse, rivalsa).

  • Alcohol and drugs

If the rider is fined for drink-driving (above 0.5 g/l, or any alcohol at all under 21) or for riding under the influence of drugs, the injured party is still compensated, but Reale Mutua can recover the full amount from you.

  • Under-age riders

If the rider is younger than the minimum age set by Italian law at the time of the accident, the insurance does not operate and the insurer can recover everything it has paid.

  • Prohibited areas and races

No cover for damage caused while riding where e-scooters are banned, or during unauthorised speed races (full recourse). Races and sports competitions are excluded in any case.

  • Report a claim within three days

Claims are reported on the blue joint accident report form (constatazione amichevole, CAI) to us or to Reale Mutua within 3 days. Reale Mutua does not pay for lawyers you appoint yourself, fines or criminal proceedings.

If you have recently moved to Italy

  • New to Italy does not mean a higher price

The tariff counts the claims on your Italian risk certificate (attestato di rischio). If this is your first policy for the scooter in Italy you have no certificate yet, and the tariff treats you as having no claims: you pay the entry premium for your municipality.

  • Plate first, then the policy

Since 16 May 2026 a privately owned e-scooter must display an identification plate (contrassegno, known as targhino). You request it on the Portale dell'Automobilista, logging in with an Italian digital identity (SPID) or electronic identity card (CIE). The policy is then registered against that plate.

  • A helmet for every rider

Since 14 December 2024 a helmet is compulsory for all e-scooter riders in Italy, adults included (Law 177/2024). It is a separate rule from insurance: riding without one is fined on its own.

  • What you need to get a quote

Your municipality of residence in Italy, the number of claims in the last five years and the policyholder's details, including the Italian tax code (codice fiscale). We go through the quote with you in English.

How it works

  1. Get your quote online, in English

The price is calculated on the insurer's tariff from the details you enter. The quote is free and does not commit you to buy.

  2. Go through it with an English-speaking adviser

Before you sign we send you the pre-contract documents (DIP and additional DIP) and the Insurance Conditions. They are in Italian, the version that is legally binding: we walk you through them in English, at no extra cost.

  3. Sign and stay covered

You sign online or at one of our offices. When you need to make a claim, you deal with us in English and we handle the paperwork with the insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Is e-scooter insurance compulsory in Italy?

Yes. Under the reform of the Highway Code (Law 177/2024), third-party liability insurance has been compulsory for privately owned e-scooters since 16 July 2026, with legal minimums of €6,450,000 for injury and €1,300,000 for property. Riding without it is fined €100 to €400 and the scooter is seized (art. 193 of the Highway Code). Dates come from the law and its implementing rules: guidance can be updated, so check before you ride.

How much does e-scooter insurance cost in Italy?

From €163.38 a year, taxes included, for private use with no claims on record. The price depends only on the municipality where you live and on the claims in the last five years: in Milan, for example, it is €193.25 a year with no claims. The online quote gives you the exact figure for your address.

Does the policy pay for my injuries if I fall off?

No. Compulsory liability insurance pays for the damage you cause to other people and their property, not for injuries you suffer yourself, which the law excludes. Monopattino Reale is liability-only: it has no personal accident or legal expenses section. Your own medical care falls under the Italian health service or a separate policy.

Do I need a number plate on my e-scooter in Italy?

Yes. Since 16 May 2026 privately owned e-scooters must display an identification plate (targhino), requested on the Portale dell'Automobilista with SPID or CIE. The plate identifies the scooter and its owner; the insurance covers damage to others. You need both to ride legally, and riding without the plate is a separate offence.

Does the liability cover in my home insurance include my e-scooter?

No. Now that e-scooters are subject to compulsory motor liability insurance, personal liability policies attached to home insurance (RC della vita privata) exclude vehicles that must be insured by law. A dedicated e-scooter policy is needed: your home policy is not a substitute.

Do I need insurance for a rental or sharing e-scooter?

No. On sharing scooters the operator provides the plate and the liability insurance, which are part of the rental price. The obligation to buy a policy applies to people who own a private e-scooter. The helmet rule and any excess in the rental contract still apply to you.

Can I use my e-scooter on holiday in other European countries?

Yes. The policy is valid in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, San Marino and the Vatican City, and in the other countries not crossed out on your Green Card. Abroad, cover follows the compulsory-insurance law of the country where the accident happens; local riding rules for e-scooters also apply.
